FISH: A Valuable Source of Nutrition (Foods Mentioned in the Qur'an)

Anything you catch in the sea is lawful for you, and all food from it, for your enjoyment and that of travellers… (Qur'an, 5:96)
The fact the average age of people developing and dying from heart disease is constantly decreasing has considerably increased the importance attached to coronary health. Although a great many advances have been registered in the treatment of heart disease, experts in the field basically recommend that careful precautions be taken before such diseases ever arise. Experts also recommend one important foodstuff for the healthy functioning of the heart and the prevention of disease: fish.

The reason why fish is such an important source of nutrition is that it both provides substances necessary for the human body and also reduces the risk of various diseases. For example, it has been revealed that when fish-which acts as a shield in terms of health with the omega-3 acid it contains-is consumed on a regular basis, it reduces the risk of heart disease and strengthens the immune system.
The fact that fish, the health benefits of which have only newly been scientifically registered, is an important nutritional source is revealed in the Qur'an. Almighty Allah makes the following references to seafood in the Qur'an: "It is He Who made the sea subservient to you so that you can eat fresh flesh from it..." (Qur'an, 16:14), "Anything you catch in the sea is lawful for you, and all food from it, for your enjoyment and that of travellers…" (Qur'an, 5:96) Furthermore, particular attention is drawn to fish in Surat al-Kahf, in which it is revealed that the Prophet Musa (as) set out on a long journey with his servant and that they took fish along with them to eat:
But when they reached their meeting-place, they forgot their fish which quickly burrowed its way into the sea. When they had gone a distance further on, he said to his servant, "Bring us our morning meal. Truly this journey of ours has made us tired." He said, "Do you see what has happened? When we went to find shelter at the rock, I forgot the fish…" (Qur'an, 18:61-63)
It is noteworthy that in Surat al-Kahf fish should be specially chosen as a foodstuff after a long, tiring journey. Therefore, one of the pieces of wisdom in this tale may well be an indication of the nutritional benefits of fish. (Allah knows best.)

In fact, when we examine the nutritional properties of fish, we encounter some very striking facts. Fish, given to us as a blessing by our Lord, are a perfect food, particularly in terms of protein, vitamin D and trace elements (certain elements found in minimal quantities in the body but which are still of great importance to it). Due to the minerals they contain-such as phosphorus, sulphur and vanadium-fish encourages growth and enables tissues to recover. Fish meat also assists in the formation of healthy teeth and gums, benefits the complexion, makes the hair healthier and contributes to the fight against bacterial infection. It also plays an important role in the prevention of heart attacks as it beautifully regulates the level of cholesterol in the blood. It helps the body to break down and use starch and fats, making it stronger and more energetic. On the other hand, it also influences the functioning of mental activities. In the event that the vitamin D and other minerals contained in fish are not consumed in sufficient quantities, disorders such as rickets (bone weakness), gum disease, goitre and hyperthyroid may all arise.[1]

In addition, modern science has also discovered that the omega-3 fatty acids in fish also occupy an important place in human health. These fats have even been described as essential fatty acids.

The Benefits of Omega-3 in Fish Oil

There are two kinds of unsaturated fatty acid in fish oil which are particularly important for our health: EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoicacid). EPA and DHA are known as polyunsaturated fats and contain the important omega-3 fatty acids. Since the fatty acids omega-3 and omega-6 are not manufactured in the human body, they need to be taken in from the outside.

There is a large body of evidence relating to the benefits to human health of fish oil, the actual benefit stemming from its omega-3 fatty acid content. Despite being present in vegetable oils, these omega-3 fatty acids are less effective in relation to human health. However, marine plankton is very effective at turning omega-3 into EPA and DHA. When fish eat plankton, their constitution becomes much richer in EPA and DHA. That, in turn, makes fish one of the richest sources of these vitally important fatty acids.

Vital Benefits of the Fatty Acids Found in Fish

One of the main features of the fatty acids in fish is the contribution they make to the body's energy production. These fatty acids carry out electron transfers by attaching themselves to oxygen in the body and permit energy to be produced for various chemical processes within it. There is therefore considerable evidence that a diet rich in fish oil helps combat fatigue and increases mental and physical capacity. Omega-3 increases the individual's powers of concentration as much as it does his or her energy levels. There is a scientific foundation to the old saying "fish is good for the brain": The main compound in brain fat is DHA, which contains omega-3 fatty acids.

The Importance of Fish for a Healthy Heart and Arteries

The omega-3 fatty acid in fish is acknowledged to protect against cardiovascular disease by reducing blood pressure and the cholesterol and triglyceride in the blood.[2] Triglyceride is a form of fat and resembles LDL (bad cholesterol) which is high in fat and low in protein content. A raised triglyceride level, especially together with high cholesterol, increases the risk of heart disease. In addition, fish oils reduce life-threatening post-heart attack abnormal heart rhythms.

In one study by the American Medical Association, it was observed that heart attack levels in women eating five portions of fish a week fell by one-third. This is thought to stem from the omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil causing less blood clotting. The normal speed of blood in our veins is 60 kmph (37.3 mph) and it is of vital importance for the blood to be of the right viscosity and for the density, quantity and speed to be at normal levels. The worst danger for our blood-apart from normal conditions of bleeding-is for it to clot and lose the ability to flow properly. Fish oils are also effective in reducing blood clotting by preventing the thrombocytes in the blood (blood platelets that concentrate the blood in the event of bleeding) from adhering to one another. Otherwise, blood thickening can lead to narrowing of the arteries. In turn, this can lead to many organs in the body-especially the heart, brain, eyes and kidneys-receiving an inadequate blood supply, function deceleration and eventually, loss of function. For example, when an artery is totally blocked on account of clotting this can lead to heart attack, paralysis or other disorders, depending on the location of the artery.

Omega-3 fatty acids also play an important role in the production of the molecule haemoglobin, that carries oxygen in the red blood cells, and in controlling the nutrients passing through the cell membrane. They also prevent the damaging effects of fats harmful to the body.

Importance for the Development of New Born Babies

Being an important component of the brain and eye, omega-3 fatty acids have been the subject of research, especially over the last 10 years, in connection with the needs of new born babies. There is a considerable body of evidence relating to the importance of omega-3 to the development of the foetus in the mother's womb and of the new-born baby. Omega-3 is of the greatest importance for the proper development of the brain and nerves throughout pregnancy and in early babyhood. Scientists emphasise the importance of mother's milk since it is a natural and perfect store of omega-3.

Benefits for Joint Health

The major risk in rheumatoid arthritis (a painful joint condition linked to rheumatism) is that of wearing of the joints, leading to irreparable damage. It has been proven that a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids prevents arthritis and reduces discomfort in swollen and sensitive joints.

Benefits Regarding the Healthy Functioning of the Brain and Nervous System

A large number of studies have revealed the effects of omega-3 fatty acids on the healthy functioning of the brain and nerves. In addition, it has been shown that fish oil reinforcement can reduce symptoms of depression and schizophrenia and prevent Alzheimer's disease (a brain disease which causes loss of memory and hinders day-to-day activities). For example, reductions in such problems as anxiety, stress and sleeping difficulties have been observed in individuals suffering from depression who took 1 gram of omega-3 fatty acid over a period of 12 weeks.[3]

Benefits against Inflammatory Disorders and Strengthening of the Immune System

At the same time, omega-3 fatty acids have an anti-inflammatory (infection preventing) function. Omega-3 can therefore be employed in the following diseases:
  • Rheumatoid arthritis (joint infection linked to rheumatism),
  • Osteoarthritis (a form of arthritis gradually degenerating the functions of joints)
  • Ulcerative colitis (ulcers linked to the inflammation of the colon), and
  • Lupus (a disease which causes patches on the skin).
  • It also protects myelin (the material surrounding nerve cells). It is therefore used in the treatment of
  • Glaucoma (an eye disorder marked by abnormally high pressure within the eyeball that may even lead to blindness)
  • Multiple sclerosis (a serious progressive disease resulting from tissue hardening in the brain and spinal cord),
  • Osteoporosis (a disease leading to structural weakening in the bone structure)
  • Diabetes patients.
  • In addition, it is also reported to be useful in the treatment of
  • Migraine patients,
  • Anorexia (a possibly fatal eating disorder)
  • Burns
  • Problems concerning skin health.
There is also wide-ranging evidence that societies such as the Greenland Eskimos and Japanese, who eat a lot of fish, rich in omega-3 fatty acid, have a much lower incidence of heart and artery disease, asthma and psoriasis. Fish is therefore recommended as a form of treatment and is particularly recommended by nutritionists on account of its proven benefits for coronary health.

Additional benefits to those outlined above are emerging every day. Moreover, it has only been possible to reveal the health benefits of fish by a great many scientists working in well-equipped research laboratories. The fact that such a valuable source of nutrition is indicated in the Qur'an, and especially that it is described as a fatigue eliminator in Surat al-Kahf, is nothing short of awe-inspiring. All the benefits provided by fish are a great blessing given us by our Lord. As with all foods, it is Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, Who has created the superior structure in fish for our benefit.

The Qur'an is the Word of ALLAH (The Perfection of the Qur'an from Literary Aspect)

All that we have seen in this work shows us one clear fact: The Qur'an, this extraordinary book which was revealed to the Seal of the Prophets, Muhammad (saas), is a source of inspiration and true knowledge. The book of Islam-no matter what subject it refers to-is being proved as Allah's Word as each new piece of historical, scientific or archaeological information comes to light. Facts about scientific subjects and the news delivered to us about the past and future, facts that no one could have known at the time of the Qur'an's revelation, are announced in its verses. It is impossible for this information, examples of which we have discussed in detail in this book, to have been known with the level of knowledge and technology available in 7th century Arabia. With this in mind, let us ask:

Could anyone in 7th century Arabia have known that our atmosphere is made up of seven layers?
Could anyone in 7th century Arabia have known in detail the various stages of development from which an embryo grows into a baby and then enters the world from inside his mother?

Could anyone in 7th century Arabia have known that the universe is "steadily expanding," as the Qur'an puts it, when modern scientists have only in recent decades put forward the idea of the "Big Bang"?
Could anyone in 7th century Arabia have known about the fact that each individual's fingertips are absolutely unique, when we have only discovered this fact recently, using modern technology and modern scientific equipment?

Could anyone in 7th century Arabia have known about the role of one of Pharaoh's most prominent aids, Haman, when the details of hieroglyphic translation were only discovered two centuries ago?
Could anyone in 7th century Arabia have known that the word "Pharaoh" was only used from the 14th century B.C. and not before, as the Old Testament erroneously claims?

Could anyone in 7th century Arabia have known about Ubar and Iram's Pillars, which were only discovered in recent decades via the use of NASA satellite photographs?

The only answer to these questions is as follows: the Qur'an is the Word of the Almighty Allah, the Originator of everything and the One Who encompasses everything with His knowledge. In one verse, Allah says, "If it had been from other than Allah, they would have found many inconsistencies in it." (Qur'an, 4:82) Every piece of information the Qur'an contains reveals the secret miracles of this divine book.

The human being is meant to hold fast to this Divine Book revealed by Allah and to receive it with an open heart as his one and only guide in life. In the Qur'an, Allah tells us the following:
This Qur'an could never have been devised by any besides Allah. Rather it is confirmation of what came before it and an elucidation of the Book which contains no doubt from the Lord of all the worlds. Do they say, "He has invented it"? Say: "Then produce a sura like it and call on anyone you can besides Allah if you are telling the truth." (Qur'an, 10:37-38)
And this is a Book We have sent down and blessed, so follow it and have fear of Allah so that hopefully you will gain mercy. (Qur'an, 6:155)

A Selection of Other Statements Regarding the Qur'an (The Perfection of the Qur'an from the Literary Aspect)

Everything made so much sense. This is the beauty of the Qur'an; it asks you to reflect and reason... When I read the Qur'an further, it talked about prayer, kindness and charity. I was not a Muslim yet, but I felt the only answer for me was the Qur'an and Allah had sent it to me.[1] (Yusuf Islam [Cat Stevens], former British pop star)
I am not a Muslim in the usual sense, though I hope I am a "Muslim" as "one surrendered to God," but I believe that embedded in the Quran and other expressions of the Islamic vision are vast stores of divine truth from which I and other occidentals have still much to learn, and "Islam is certainly a strong contender for the supplying of the basic framework of the one religion of the future."[2] (From the book Islam and Christianity Today)
The essential and definite element of my conversion to Islam was the Qur'an. I began to study it before my conversion with the critical spirit of a Western intellectual... There are certain verses of this book, the Qur'an, revealed more than thirteen centuries ago, which teach exactly the same notions as the most modern scientific researches do. This definitely converted me.[3] (Ali Selman Benoist, France, Doctor of Medicine)
I have read the Sacred Scriptures of every religion; nowhere have I found what I encountered in Islam: perfection. The Holy Qur'an, compared to any other scripture I have read, is like the Sun compared to that of a match. I firmly believe that anybody who reads the Word of Allah with a mind that is not completely closed to Truth, will become a Muslim.[4] (Saifuddin Dirk Walter Mosig)
The strength of the Koran is that a Muslim, or anyone, can open it to any page and get a message dealing with life's meaning.[5] (The well-known theologian John Esposito)
I hope the time is not far off when I shall be able to unite all the wise and educated men of all the countries and establish a uniform regime based on the principles of Qur'an which alone are true and which alone can lead men to happiness.[6] (French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte)

Tony Blair: "Qur'an Inspired Me"

The British Prime Minister Tony Blair says that he has read the whole Qur'an three times. In his statements, he often mentioned his admiration for the Qur'an's moral teaching. On March 29, 2000, the BBC reported on Blair's admiration for the Qur'an in a feature entitled "Blair: Qur'an Inspired Me." He was reported to have said that Islam was a good and peaceful religion, that he owned two copies of the Qur'an, and that he was quite inspired by it:
If you read the Koran, it is so clear… the concept of love and fellowship as the guiding spirits of humanity.[7]
Two or three days before the 9/11 attacks, the British newspaper The Mail on Sunday published an article in which Blair said that former US president Bill Clinton's daughter Chelsea had given him a copy of the Qur'an as a gift, that he had begun to read it and that it given him courage in times of difficulty.[8] After the attacks, Blair once again said in an interview on Al-Jazeera television that had read the Qur'an. He also added:
I read the message of the Koran, insofar as it can be translated. And I read about Islam and I enjoy doing that. And I think that I have learned things about the Koran that I never knew before and I think a lot of Christians would be interested.[9]
Time magazine described Blair as "long-time student of the Koran" in one article about him.[10]
A speech by Bill Clinton which described how influenced he was by the Qur'an

In his last year in the White House, former US President Bill Clinton received a number of Muslims during Ramadan. At the meeting, which began with a reading from the Qur'an, Clinton used verses from the Qur'an in his own address and frequently stated his interest in Islam:
And I thought it was particularly moving that Imam read the passage from the Koran that said that Allah created nations and tribes that we might know one another, not that we might despise one another. There's a wonderful passage in the Hebrew Torah, which warns people never to turn aside the stranger, for it is like turning aside the most high God. And the Christian Bible says that people should love their neighbor as themselves. But it's quite wonderful to say that Allah created the nations and tribes that they might know one another better... Let me say, also, that there is much that the world can learn from Islam. It is now practiced by one of every four people on Earth. Americans are learning more in our schools and universities. Indeed, I remember that our daughter took a course on Islamic history in high school and read large portions of the Koran, and came home at night and educated her parents about it, and later asked us questions about it... So I ask you again to rededicate yourselves in this coming year to making sure that others in this country truly understand and appreciate the faith you embrace, its practices, its beliefs, its precepts and its inclusive humanity... The Koran also teaches, in addition, to the fact that we should do unto others as we wish to have done to us, and reject for others what we would reject for ourselves, but we should also make a commitment to live in peace…[11]
George W. Bush:

"It's [the Qur'an is] a very thoughtful gift."
On 26 September 2001, President George W. Bush held a substantive meeting with American Muslim leaders, and said that "the teachings of Islam are the teachings of peace and good." During this meeting, Dr. Muzammil Siddiqi, President of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), presented a copy of the Holy Qur'an to President Bush. During a brief press conference after the meeting, the President expressed his pleasure saying:
And I want to thank you very much for the-the gift you gave me, Imam, the Koran. It's a very thoughtful gift. I say, "Thank you very much for the gift." He said, "It's the best gift I could give you, Mr. President." I appreciate that very much.[12]
On September 17, 2001, President Bush visited the Washington Islam Center mosque, one of the oldest in the United States. In his speech, he emphasized that Islam is a religion of peace and that the terrorist attacks of 9/11 have nothing to do with the teachings of Islam or the sincere Muslims of the world, all of whom deplore terrorism. Bush stated that those who inflict harm on innocent and civilian Muslims are just as in the wrong as those who carry out terrorist attacks. At this crowded meeting, covered live by a large number of domestic and international television stations, President Bush read the following verse from the Qur'an:[13]
"In the long run, evil in the extreme will be the end of those who do evil. For that they rejected the signs of Allah and held them up to ridicule." (Qur'an, 30:10)

Actions For Performing Wudu (Ablution)

Perform completely the wudu, imitating the method commanded by Allah (SWT) in the Qu'ran:

Allah (SWT) said, "O you who believe! When you intend to offer prayer, wash your faces and your hands (fore-arms) up to the elbows, rub (by passing wet hands over) your heads, and (wash) your feet up to ankles…" (Al-Ma'idah 5:6)

The Prophet (SAW) said, "Allah does not accept prayer without purification ..." (Sahih - Muslim and others)

Making Niyyah (Intention) for Wudu

Before starting the actions of wudu it is necessary to make niyyah. Make niyyah that the act of performing wudu is for the purpose of purity only. Niyyah should be made in the heart because it is an action of the heart and not of the tongue. Niyyah by words is not approved by the Prophet (SAW).

Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, "Verily the actions are by intention and there is for everyone only what he intended..." (Sahih - Fath-ul-Baaree and Muslim)

At-Tasmiyyah (Mentioning Allah's Name)

After niyyah, start wudu by saying aloud or silently:
"Bismillah"
(In the Name of Allah)

Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, "There is no wudu for him who does not mention Allah's name upon it." (Sahih - Ibn Maajah, At-Tirmithee, Abu Dawood, and others)

Washing Hands Up to the Wrist

Start by using the left hand to wash the right hand up to the wrist making sure that no part of the hand is left dry, especially between each finger. Repeat three times. Then use the right hand to wash the left hand up to the wrist making sure that no part of the hand is left dry, especially between each finger. Repeat three times.

Humran (RA) narrates that Uthman (RA) called for water to make wudu and washed his hands three times... then said, "I saw Rasoolullah (SAW) make wudu just as I have made wudu." (Sahih - Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Washing Mouth

Take water into the right hand and wash the mouth by moving the water around inside the mouth making sure to reach the back of the throat. Repeat three times.

Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, "When you make wudu then wash your mouth." (Sahih - Al-Baihaqee)

Sniffing Water Into the Nose and Then Ejecting It

Put water into the right palm, sniff the water into the nose and breath it into its backmost part, then eject the water from the nose with the fingers on the left hand. Repeat three times.
The Prophet (SAW) said, "When one of you makes wudu then let him enter water into his nose, then expel it." (Sahih - Al-Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawood)

Abd Khair (RA) said, "We were sitting looking towards Ali (RA) - as he made Wudu - and he entered into his mouth a handful of water with his right hand and washed his mouth and nose, then expelled it from his nose with his left hand - he did that three times, then said, 'Whoever would like to see the way of purification of Rasoolullah (SAW) - then this is his purification.'" (Sahih - Ad-Daarimee)

Washing the Face

Wash the face, from ear to ear, and forehead to chin making sure that no part of the face is left dry. Repeat three times.

Allah (SWT) said, "O you who believe! When you intend to offer prayer, wash your faces and your hands (fore-arms) up to the elbows, rub (by passing wet hands over) your heads, and (wash) your feet up to ankles…" (Al-Ma'idah 5:6)

Humran ibn Abaan (RA) narrates that Uthman (RA) called for water to make wudu and so mentioned the way in which the Prophet (SAW) made wudu. Humran (RA) said, "Then he washed his face three times." (Sahih - Al-Bukhari, Muslim)

Running Water Through the Beard with the Fingers

Take a handful of water into the right hand and enter it below the chin and rub it through the beard making sure to get all the way down to the roots of the hair.

Anas (RA) narrates that the Prophet (SAW), when he made wudu, used to take a handful of water and enter it below his chin and rub it through his beard and said, "This is what my Lord - the Great and Exalted - has ordered me to do." (Sahih - Abu Dawood, Al-Baihaqee, Al-Haakim)

Washing the Hands and Arms Including the Elbows

Use the left hand to wash the right hand, forearm and elbow, up to and including the elbow making sure that no part of the hand, arm and elbow is left dry, especially between the fingers. Repeat three times. Then use the right hand to wash the left hand, forearm and elbow making sure that no part of the hand, arm and elbow is left dry, especially between the fingers.

Nu'aim ibn Mijmar (RA) said, "I saw Abu Hurairah make wudu - he washed his face and completed the wudu, then washed his right hand until he reached the upper arm, then his left hand till he reached the upper arm" - then in the end of the Hadith he said: "This is how I saw Rasoolullah (SAW) make wudu.'" (Sahih - Muslim)

Wiping the Head *

Wipe the head with the fingers of both hands, starting from the forehead, taking them to the nape of the neck, then bring them back to the forehead. Do this one time.

Allah (SWT) said, "O you who believe! When you intend to offer prayer, wash your faces and your hands (fore-arms) up to the elbows, rub (by passing wet hands over) your heads, and (wash) your feet up to ankles…" (Al-Ma'idah 5:6)

The Prophet (SAW) wiped his head with his two hands, moving them forwards and backwards - beginning with the front of the head and (wiping) with them up to his nape then he (SAW) returned them to the place from which he began. (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Muslim, At-Tirmithee, and others)

*Wiping Over the Turban

Men who wear a head piece that is difficult to remove (such as a turban) should wipe over the head covering. Do this one time.

Amr ibn Umayyah (RA) said, "I saw Rasoolullah (SAW) wipe over his turban and leather socks." (Sahih - Al-Bukhari and others)

*Wiping Over the Turban and Forelock

If part of the head is uncovered and it is normally so, then it is preferable to wipe over the part that is uncovered along with the turban. Do this one time.

Shu'bah (RA) said, "The Messenger of Allah (SAW) made wudu and wiped over the front portion of his scalp, his turban and his socks. (Sahih - Muslim)

*Woman's Head Cover

As for the woman's head cover, it is also permissible to wipe over it. This would be the case of a woman that has no private place for wudu (i.e. where non-Mahram men or non-Muslim women may see them). Do this one time.

Umm Salamah (RA) used to wipe over her head cover . (See'al-Mughnee' - Ibn Mundhir)

Wiping the Ears

Wipe the ears by inserting the tips of the index fingers into the ears, twist them around the folds of the ears then pass the thumb behind the ears from the bottom, upwards. Wipe the ears with the water used for the head. Do this one time.

Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, "The two ears are a part of the head." (Sahih - At-Tirmithee, Abu Dawood, and Ibn Maajah)
From Abdullah ibn Amr (RA) - about the way of performing wudu - he (SAW) said, "Then he (SAW) wiped his head and entered his two forefingers into his ears and wiped the backs of his ears with his thumbs". (Sahih - Abu Dawood, An-Nasaa’ee, Ibn Maajah, Ibn Khuzaimah)
Ar-Rabee bint Mu'awwidh (RA) reported that the Prophet (SAW), "Wiped his head with water remaining in his hand". (Hasan - Abu Dawood and others)

Washing the Feet and Ankles*

Use the right hand to wash the right foot up to and including the ankle making sure no part of the foot is left dry, especially between the toes. Use the right hand pinkie finger to wash between the toes starting on the right side of the foot. Repeat three times. Then use the left hand to wash the left foot up to and including the ankle making sure no part of the foot is left dry, especially between the toes. Use the left hand pinkie finger to wash between the toes starting on the right side of the foot.

"Ibn Umar (RA) said, "Rasoolullah (SAW) fell behind us and then came upon us during a journey, then we found him and it was time for 'Asr - so we began to make Wudu and wipe over our feet, so he (SAW) called out at the top of his voice, 'Woe to the ankles from the Fire. (two or three times)'" (Sahih - Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

"Al-Mustaurad (RA) said, "When the Prophet (SAW) made wudu he would enter the water between his toes with his little finger." (Sahih - Abu Dawood, At-Tirmithee, and Ibn Maajah)

*Wiping Over the Foot Covering

Wiping over the top of the foot covering with wet hands instead of washing the feet is allowed, provided that the foot covering has been put on after performing wudu that included washing the feet. Wipe the top of each foot one time, using the right hand for the right foot and the left hand for the left foot. This is allowed for 24 hours from the time of wudu, if not traveling. After this time the feet must be washed. It is allowed for 3 days from the time of wudu, if traveling. After this time the feet must be washed.
Amr ibn Umayyah (RA) said, "I saw Rasoolullah (SAW) wipe over his turban and leather socks." (Sahih - Al-Bukhari and others)

Drying the Body-Parts After Wudu

Drying the body-parts after wudu is a desirable action.
Aishah (RA) said, "Rasoolullah (SAW) had a cloth which he used to dry himself with after making wudu." (Sahih - An-Nasaa'ee)

How Many Times For Each Action in Wudu

Each detail of wudu has been performed by Prophet Muhammad (SAW) once, twice or three times (except wiping of head and ears, these should only be done once). Washing each body-part once is obligatory - and the second and third washings are Sunnah - and it is better to wash three times so as to follow the Sunnah of the Prophet (SAW).

Ibn Abbas (RA) said, "Rasoolullah (SAW) made wudu (washing each part) once." (Sahih - Al-Bukhari)
Abdullah ibn Zaid (RA) narrates that the Prophet (SAW) made wudu (washing each part) twice. (Sahih - Al-Bukhari)
Uthman (RA) recorded that he (SAW) washed each of the parts three times. (Sahih - Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Beginning With the Right

Always wash the right hand before the left hand. Always wash the right foot before the left foot. Always wash the right side before the left side.
Aisha (RA) said, "Rasoolullah (SAW) used to like to begin with the right in putting on shoes, combing his hair, in purification and in all of his affairs." (Sahih - Al-Bukhari, Muslim, and others)

Reading Du'as (Supplications) After Wudu

After wudu, first say aloud or silently:
"Ash hadu an la ilaha illal lahu wah dahu la shareeka lahu wa ash hadu an-na muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasulhu"
(I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and I testify that Muhammad (SAW) is His slave and Messenger)

Then say aloud or silently:
"Allah hum maj 'alnee minat taw-wabeena, waj 'alnee minal muta tah-hireen."
(O Allah, make me one of those who constantly repents to You and of those who purify themselves)

Rasoolullah (SAW) said, "None of you makes wudu and completes the wudu then says: "Ash hadu an la ilaha illal lahu wah dahu la shareeka lahu wa ash hadu an-na muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasulhu" except that all eight Gates of Paradise are opened for him - so that he enters by whichever he pleases." (Sahih - Muslim, Abu Dawood, At-Tirmithee, An-Nasaa'ee, Ibn Maajah)
"Allah hum maj 'alnee minat taw-wabeena, waj 'alnee minal muta tah-hireen." (Sahih - At-Tirmithee)

Actions That Break Wudu

Actions that break wudu are as follows: that which comes out from the two private parts (front and back) such as urine*, wind, excretion*, blood*, etc., sound sleep while lying down or reclining, touching the uncovered private parts,
Allah (SWT) said, "…or any of you comes from answering the call of nature, or you have been in contact with women (sexual intercourse)…" (Al-Ma’idah 5:6)

The Prophet (SAW) said, "There is no wudu except from a sound or a smell." (Sahih - Ul-Jaarni)
Rasoolullah (SAW) said, "The eye is the drawstring for the anus, so he who sleeps then let him make wudu." (Sahih - Abu Dawood, Ibn Maajah, Ahmad)

Rasoolullah (SAW) said, "If one of you touches his penis and there is no veil between him and it nor any cover, then wudu has become obligatory for him." (Sahih - Al-Haakim and others)

*That Which Comes Out From the Private Parts

Menstruating and post-partum bleeding women are not permitted to pray. Menstruating and post-partum bleeding women must complete their bleeding period and make ghusl (wudu plus bathing the entire body) before returning to their prayers.

Anyone having a continuous flow of blood, urine or excretion from the privates parts must wash the privates and make wudu for every prayer, after the time has entered. Anyone having continuous impurities from the private parts fall under the rules of istihadah. For more information about itsihadah read Natural Blood of Women by Shayekh Muhammad bin Salih Al-Utheimeen or any other book containing laws from the Quran and authentic Sunnah regarding the natural blood of women.

The Prophet (SAW) said to Fatimah bint Hubaish (RA), "Give up the prayer when your menses begins, and after it finishes, wash the blood off your body (by having a full shower/bath), and start praying." (Sahih - Al-Bukhari)

The Prophet (SAW) told Fatimah bint Hubaish (RA), "Refrain from Salat during the days of your normal menses then wash and make ablution for every Salat and then pray even if blood drops onto the mat!" (Sahih - Al-Bukhari)

The rulings concerning the continuous flow of impurities are addressed by Shayekh ibn Baz (rahmatullahi alay) and Shayekh ibn Utheimeen (rahmatullahi alay) in Islamic Fatawa Regarding Women Compiled by Muhammad bin Abdul-Aziz Al-Musnad Translated by Jamaal Al-Din Zarabozo.

Assalaam alaikum,

[assalaam alaikum wrt, since alot of people have been posting recently about trying to learn arabic, i thought it would be a good opportunity to bring up an idea i've had for a while now
i have this list of 835 words of the Quran whose frequency. in the Quran is 10 and above with meanings in English, by knowing the words one can understand 58.63 percent text of the Quran.
it's extremely hard to actually sit down with this and memorize the words. and don't ask me to photocopy this and send it to you because everyone i've given it to hasn't been able to do anything with it (believe me i've had this for the last 3 years)
so to force myself to learn these words inshallah i am going to try to learn one word a day and try to go from there. i'll post them on here to force myself and if anyone else wants to join in learning
i just wish there was a way i could somehow get the arabic on here as well...but i'll do my best to kind of phoeneticize it ]
May Allah reward those who did the research to give us some great examples of how the words are used and may Allah guide us along the path to understanding the Quran. Ameen.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Please double check the verses, the reference numbers, and transliteration before using them. This list was basically meant as a personal record and has not been proof read and there may be mistakes in it.

  1. Abada(Abadan) = Forever, Never
  2. The word abada appears several times in phrases like "...beneath which rivers flow, abiding therein forever..."
    Here is an example:
    Quran 98:8
"Their reward is with Allah: Gardens of Eternity, beneath which rivers flow; they will dwell therein for ever; Allah well pleased with them, and they with Him: all this for such as fear their Lord and Cherisher."
    Forever
    ...ma keseeni fihi abadan...
(18:3) (A state of bliss) in which they shall dwell forever.
    Never
...Qaala yaMusa inna lan nad khulaha abadan...
(5:24) They said:O Moses, behold! never shall we enter that land.

  3. Liabeehi = To his father (i=kasra, ee=letter yeh)
  4. Li means "to" or "for" abeehi means "his father"
I found this word in the story of Abraham (A) and in the story of Yusuf (A).
    TO HIS FATHER:
Wa iz qaala Ibrahimu liabeehi Azara...
"Lo!Abraham said to his father Azar:"Takest thou idols for gods? for I see thee and thy people in manifest error." (6:74)
    Iz qaala liabeehi ya abati...
"Behold he(Abraham) said to his father: Why worship that which heareth not and seeth not and can profit thee nothing? (19:42)
    Iz qaala liabeehi wa qaumihi...
"Behold! he said to his father and his people "What are these images to which ye are (so assiduously) devoted?" (21:52)
Iz qaala liabeehi wa qaumihi ma ta'budoon...
"Behold he (Abraham) said to his father and his people:"What worship ye?" (26:70)
    Wa iz qaala Ibrahimu liabeehi...
"Behold!Abraham said to his father and his people:"I do indeed clear myself of what ye worship" (43:26)
    ..Illa qaula Ibrahima liabeehi...
"...when Abraham said to his father:"I will pray for forgiveness for thee though i have no power (to get) aught on thy behalf from Allah..." (60:4)
Iz qaala Yusufu liabeehi yaa aabati...
"Behold Joseph said to his father:"O my father!I did see eleven stars and the sun and the moon;I saw them prostrate themselves to me!" (12:4)
    FOR HIS FATHER
wa ma kaana ustighfaru Ibrahima liabeehi...
"And Abraham prayed for his father's forgiveness only because of a promise ha had made to him. But when it became clear to him that he was an enemy to Allah he dissociated himself from him: for Abraham was most tender-hearted forbearing." (9:114)

Here are some references. Use the Quranic word search and voila!
    Aabaa ana
    2:170
When it is said to them: "Follow what Allah hath revealed:" They say: "Nay! we shall follow the ways of our fathers." What! even though their fathers were void of wisdom and guidance?
qaalu bal nattaabiu maa alfaina alaihi aabaa ana
    26:74
They said: "Nay, but we found our fathers doing thus (what we do)."
qaalu bal wa jadnaa aabaa ana kazalika yafaloon
    Aabaa akum
    2:200
So when ye have accomplished your holy rites, celebrate the praises of Allah, as ye used to celebrate the praises of your fathers,- yea, with far more Heart and soul. There are men who say: "Our Lord! Give us (Thy bounties) in this world!" but they will have no portion in the Hereafter.
    kazikri kum aabaa akum
    Aabaa una
    6:148
Those who give partners (to Allah) will say: "If Allah had wished, we should not have given partners to Him nor would our fathers; nor should we have had any taboos." So did their ancestors argue falsely, until they tasted of Our wrath. Say: "Have ye any (certain) knowledge? If so, produce it before us. Ye follow nothing but conjecture: ye do nothing but lie."
Lau sha allahu maa ashrakna wa laa aabaa una wa laa harram na min shai in
    16:35
The worshippers of false gods say: "If Allah had so willed, we should not have worshipped aught but Him - neither we nor our fathers,- nor should we have prescribed prohibitions other than His." So did those who went before them. But what is the mission of messengers but to preach the Clear Message?
Min sha innahnu wa laa abaa una wa laa harram na
    Aabaa ukum
    4:22
And marry not women whom your fathers married,- except what is past: It was shameful and odious,- an abominable custom indeed.
Wa laa tankihu maa nakaha aabaa ukum minna nisaai
    9:24
Say: If it be that your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your mates, or your kindred; the wealth that ye have gained; the commerce in which ye fear a decline: or the dwellings in which ye delight - are dearer to you than Allah, or His Messenger, or the striving in His cause;- then wait until Allah brings about His decision: and Allah guides not the rebellious

    29:28 (ta'toona = (you) commit)
And (remember) Lut: behold, he said to his people: "Ye do commit lewdness, such as no people in Creation (ever) committed before you.

    29:29 (ta'toona = you come)

    24:28 (ahadan)
