Ubayy ibn ka'b ()
Al-ansari al-bukhari. one of the ansar of khazraj, "the master of the reciters". he was one of those at the second pledge of 'aqaba. he was present at badr and all the battles. 'umar, the second khalif, called him "the master of the muslims". ubayy was one of the select few who committed the qur'anic revelations to writing and had a mushaf of his own. he acted as a scribe for the prophet, writing letters for him. at the demise of the prophet, he was one of the twenty-five or so people who knew the qur' an completely by heart. his recitation was so beautiful and his understanding so profound that the prophet encouraged his companions to learn the qur' an from him and from three others. he was the first to write for the prophet. he died in 29 or 32 ah while `uthman was khalif.(Source:Taha Publication)

Ulama ()
the learned, knowledgeble people in Islam. Plural form of alim.

Ulu'1-amr ()

Ulu'l-`azm ()
"The prophets with resolve", who are adam, nuh, ibrahim, musa, `isa and Muhammad.(Source:Taha Publication)


Uluhiya ()
Divinity, divine nature.(Source:Taha Publication)  


Umana' ()
Those who are faithful and trustworthy, the plural of aman.(Source:Taha Publication)  


Umar ibn al-Khattab (oo-mer ibin al-khut-taab)
A close companion of Prophet Muhammad and the second of the four "Rightly-Guided" caliphs. He ruled from 634 to 644 C.E. and developed many institutions, such as a police force and treasury, for the early Muslim state. (Source:CIE)  


Umm al-mu'mineen (UM AL-MU'MINEEN)
means 'Mother of the Believers'. This was the title of the Prophet's wives; (Surah 33 Ayah 6 stipulated that they could not marry after the Prophet's death because all of the believers were their spiritual children.

Umm al-mu'minin ()

Umm walad ()

Ummah ()
an ummah is a community or a people. It is used in reference to the community of Believers or Muslims.

Ummah (oom-mah)
The worldwide community of Muslims, whose population exceeds 1.2 billion. A term used to denote the collective body of believers in Islam. (Source:CIE)   


Ummi (Umme)
The 'unlettered'. It is also used to refer to those who do not possess Divine revelation.(Source:Prof. Ishaq Zahid)

Umrah (oom-rah)
The "lesser" pilgrimage to Makkah. This journey to worship at the Ka'bah and offer prayers can be performed by Muslims at any time during the year, unlike the Hajj, which takes place during a specified period in the twelfth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. (Source:CIE)

this is the lesser pilgrimage which is optional and can be performed at any time.

Umrah al-Qada ()
The fulfilled 'Umrah - the 'Umrah which the Prophet performed in the seventh year after Hijrah which he intended to do in the sixth year but which the Quraysh unbelievers had not allowed him to complete.(Source:IslamIQ)

Ushr ()
Ten percent (in some cases five percent) of the agricultural produce payable by a Muslim as part of his religious obligation, like zakah, mainly for the benefit of the poor and the needy.(Source:IslamIQ)  


Usiil ad-din ()
Meaning `ilm usul ad-din, the science of the fundamental principles of the din as distinct from other belief systems; the science of the tenets of belief. it can also be designated as "al-fiqh al-akbar", "the greatest understanding".(Source:Taha Publication)

Uthman ibn Affan (ooth-maan ibin af-faan)
One of the close companions of Prophet Muhammad, he became the third of the "Rightly-Guided" caliphs. He ruled from 644 to 656 C.E., and is responsible for ensuring the retention of the Qur'an in a singular Arabic textual form, which still exists to this day. (Source:CIE)  


Uthman ibn fudi ()
Or usuman dan fodio or fodiye, born in maratta, northern nigeria in 1168/1754. he was an islamic scholar and qadiri shaykh. he led the fulani jihad in northern nigeria with his younger brother `abdullahi and son Muhammad bello. he was a hafiz of qur'an, maliki faqih, poet, and scholar. he was worried about the trend to syncretism and so made hijra from the lands of the gobir to the north and west. he fought for four years against the gobir and habe peoples and died in sifawa in 1230/1817. his famous book, ihya' as-sunna, deals with the daily practices of islam. he wrote numerous books, including the kitab `usul ad-din and al-masa'il al-muhimma.(Source:Taha Publication)  


Uwaysi ()
One who obtains illumination without being a follower of a spiritual teacher. the name is taken from uways al-qarani, a gnostic and contemporary of the prophet who did not meet him, although they knew of each other.(Source:Taha Publication)  


Uzzah ()
a chief goddess in the religion of the pre-Islamic Arabs during the days of Jahiliyyah.
