Sa'd Ibn 'Ubaadah (May Allah be pleased with him)

Sa'd ibn 'Ubaadah (May Allah be pleased with him) was chief of the tribe of Khazraj and he was an eminent man from a good family and a well-known leader amongst the Ansaar. In a hadith narrated upon the authority of Ibn Abbaas (May Allah be pleased with him) who said:

"The flag of the Prophet peace be upon him was with 'Ali, and the flag of the Ansaar (the Muslims of Medina who welcomed and aided the emigrants) was with Sa'd ibn 'Ubaadah. And when the fighting became intense then the Messenger of Allah peace be upon him would be underneath the flag of the Ansaar."

In a hadith narrated upon the authority of Qays ibn Sa'd who said:

" The Messenger of Allah peace be upon him came to visit us in our house and he said: 'Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah!' (However) Sa'd returned the salutation in a soft voice. Qays said: 'I said: Will you not give the Messenger of Allah peace be upon him permission to enter?' He (Sa'd) replied: 'Leave him so that he will give us many salutations.' The Messenger of Allah peace be upon him then said (again): 'Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah!' Sa'd (again) returned the salutation in a soft voice. The Messenger of Allah peace be upon him said (again): 'Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah!' Then the Messenger of Allah peace be upon him went away. Sa'd followed after him and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I heard your salutations and I returned them to you in a soft voice so that you might give us many salutations. The Messenger of Allah peace be upon him then returned (to Sa'd's house) with him. Sa'd then offered to prepare a bath for him and he took a bath. He then gave (the Messenger of Allah r) a long wrapper died (yellow) with saffron or wars (a yellow plant from Yemen) and he wrapped it (around himself). The Messenger of Allah peace be upon him then raised his hands and said: 'O Allah bestow your blessings and mercy on the family of Sa'd ibn 'Ubaadah.' The Messenger of Allah peace be upon him then ate some food. When he was ready to depart, Sa'd brought a donkey which was covered with a blanket and the Messenger of Allah peace be upon him mounted it. Sa'd said: 'O Qays, accompany the Messenger of Allah peace be upon him.' Qays said: 'The Messenger of Allah peace be upon him said to me: 'Ride (with
me).' But I refused. He (the Messenger of Allah r) then said: 'Either ride (with me) or go away?' He (Qays) said: 'So I went away.'"
